Comments:  These ikonic nebulae are part of a vast cloud of interstellar gas and dust which covers the entire region of the constellation Orion.  Some of the gas is ionized by the radiation of the surrounding stars (emission nebulae), but other areas of the dust cloud are so dense that they obscure the light and are thus silhoutted against these emission nebulae.  This is the process that gives us the famous Horsehead Nebula.  The color version may be seen here
